In the Arms of Buddha…Say Wat?! Part 2

Temple of Buddha: Name Game

A resounding "yes" is what we answered Professor X after he provided us information regarding a certain temple in Bangkok that only opens its gates to the public during the annual festivity. The ride going to the temple is a breeze, thanks to our Tuk Tuk driver Sa-Dee. Riding a Tuk Tuk is like riding our local jeep but only smaller in size; I thought I could compare the experience to our tricycle but it was way better than the former.

Temple decoration for the Festivities

I've never heard of this temple before nor saw it to any sites that I've visited, so I'm really looking forward in visiting this Temple. Most of us didn't remember the name of the temple when I ask them, I would like to ask Sa-Dee as well but a golden head of a Buddha statue is already peeking from the horizon...I think we have just arrived.

Wat Intharavihan

Standing Buddha statue

The moment our Tuk Tuk went to a halt we immediately walked towards the temple. It was beautiful, maybe because it wasn't part of the plan, it was unexpected, like a surprise turn of events. The temple is called Wat Intharavihan, it's prominent feature is the Golden Standing Buddha, a site that's way different from the usual. We got lucky because that day Thai people are celebrating the yearly festival. It was the only time they open their gates to the public.

See how huge the Golden Standing Buddha Is?

I found a few facts about this temple:
  • How huge is the Standing Buddha at Wat Intharawihan/Wat Intharaviharn ? The foot section tells all. It measures 32 metres in height and approx. 12 metres wide.
  • How to get there? located at Bangkhunphrom sub-district, Nakhon District, Bangkok, Thailand and at the nothern edge of Banglamphoo area.
  • It is also addressed as Wat In or Wat Intharawihan.
Temple inside the Wat In that houses other
Buddha Statues

You can also find a temple inside Wat In, which houses other Buddha statues. We felt like we are very lucky that day. Also, not many tourist are in the area, we almost had the whole temple for ourselves. Truly, we are in the arms of Buddha that day, each temple that we've visited provided a different atmosphere, view and state of Buddha.

Ended the tour with a nice walk in the park

Our Temple hopping was really a success even though we only have our map as our weapon. We really appreciate meeting the Professor; as they say in Thai "khob-kun-Krub".
